PROJECT TITLE
Monitoring biodynamics of mixed cultures using the newly developed method of taking fingerprints – BioDinaMik

PROJECT CODE
HR.3.2.01-0331

COORDINATOR
Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnologhy

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT
With the development of fast, efficient and cost-effective methods for monitoring biodynamics of mixed culture, which involves the identification and quantification of microorganisms in mixed culture, effectiveness of mixed cultures would be significantly increased and their general use in industry and biomedicine. Also a new possibility for reduced or rational and efficient use of antibiotics both in medicine and in food production with significantly fewer side effects is opened.

Independent work of young researchers and post doctoral students on application of a newly developed algorithm for the detection of species and strains for the issue of monitoring biodynamics of mixed cultures, the establishment of controlled bioreactor cultivation and maintenance of mixed cultures, and finally integration algorithms with a bioreactor in the final system for monitoring biodynamics mixed cultures in real time, will directly affect their professional development and strengthen their competence in the field of research and development.

PROJECT PURPOSE
The purpose of the project is strengthening of research and entrepreneurial competence of young researchers and post doctoral students and create conditions for their inclusion in the European Research Area . Through the mobility of researchers in two research centers of Europe not only to strengthen research competence but would work on the intensive networking activities with relevant actors at European level and passed the knowledge on to the home institution .

BASIC OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT
The project aims to strengthen the research and entrepreneurial competence of young researchers .

THE WIDER OBJECTIVE
The wider objective of the project is implementation of methods for identification of microorganisms by mass spectrometry and to monitor the biodynamic cultivation of mixed cultures . This is a new method developed at the institution. This method offered a fast, efficient and cost-effective alternative for monitoring biodynamics of mixed cultures which would significantly improve the area of research as well as the use of mixed cultures in industry and biomedicine

EXPECTED RESULTS
Expected project result is related to the strengthening research and entrepreneurial competence of young researchers , will directly affect their professional development and to strengthen their competence in the field of research and development. 5 young researchers from Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology will through independent work, implementation of developed methods, establishment of bioreactor breeding and maintaining of mixed cultures, and finally with integration of the algorithm with the final bioreactor system for monitoring biodynamics mixed cultures in real time contribute to the expected result .

PROJECT VALUE
Total funding of project is 1,590,988.07 HRK of which 1,590,988.07 HRK represent a grant of the European Social Fund, which is co-financed by the European Union .

IMPLEMENTATION PERIOD OF THE PROJECT
29.06.2015 – 29.09.2016
